Puppy checklist

Japanese Spitz Puppy checklist

A helpful list of the essentials to get started with your Japanese Spitz puppy. Also you can ask the breeder if there is anything else that they would recommend.

Food

Always feed your puppy a premium dry food such as Purina Proplan Puppy dry food but if the breeder has been feeding your puppy a different diet then make the change slowly to this dry food.

Food and water bowls

Have a non-slip food dish that is just for your new puppy ready as well as a solid water bowl as puppies need access to fresh water throughout the day.

Warm and safe place to sleep

Provide your puppy with a clean soft bed of their own from day one. There is an extensive range of bedding so you are sure to find a bed or kennel that suits you.

Puppy shampoo

Make sure you always use a puppy specific shampoo as human shampoos can cause dry skin and irritations and adult dog shampoos maybe too strong for your new puppy.

Flea, tick and worm control

When you pick up your puppy, they will be able to guide you in the right direction for flea control and heart and intestinal worming. It is important to prevent these nasties from infesting your dog.

Collar, lead and tag

Place a lightweight collar on your Japanese Spitz puppy as soon as possible. While some puppies aren’t too keen to wear their collars at first, if you are persistent with praise and treats, they will quickly become accustomed to it and eventually hardly notice it at all. Place a pet tag with your dog’s name and your contact number.  A light weight lead is best at the start to begin walking your puppy.

Puppy toys and chews

Letting your puppy play and chew is an important part of development.   There is a wide range of puppy chews available like pigs ears and rawhide and smoked bones. There are also a wide range of puppy toys available that are suitable for a Japanese Spitz puppy from rope bones which act like floss for a young chewing puppy or Kong toys. You may prefer a combination of these in the form of activity treat balls which are great for growing puppies.  They are filled with food treats and will keep puppies occupied until they get  every last treat out.

Puppy treats

Have some puppy treats such as a small quantity of liver, chicken or beef treats on hand as it is never too early to begin training your new puppy  It is important not to give too many treats as you may give your puppy a tummy upset.

Brushes

In the beginning you will need a soft brush to get your puppy used to being brushed.   Get your puppy used to being groomed often at a young age while feeding some treats.

Transportation equipment

You should use a harness or pet carrier when travelling with your puppy to keep them restrained while you are driving.  Be sure to fit your puppy to the right carrier or harness to make the car experience safer and more enjoyable.

Toilet pads or Pee Pads

House training your pup can be frustrating with some pups but using Pee Pee Pads will make the experience a little easier.  The better absorbent training mats come with an attractant pheromone to guide your pup in the right direction.  These mats are very absorbent and capture all the urine to keep your floors dry.

Books and DVDs

Be sure you read up as much as possible about the first few weeks of dog ownership before you pick up your Japanese Spitz puppy to make the experience of owning a puppy as enjoyable and rewarding as possible and you will have a friend for life.
